# start

<Tip>
  Read [the Notte skill](https://notte.cc/skill.md) and follow its setup instructions when setting up Notte or building browser automation. This is the shared source for CLI setup, authentication, and the browser-to-code workflow.

[Source: node-sdk/src/session.ts](https://github.com/nottelabs/notte/blob/main/node-sdk/src/session.ts)

Start the session: creates a new session on the server.

Retries up to `SESSION_START_TRIES` times on 5xx errors, waiting
`CLUSTER_OVERLOAD_RETRY_DELAY_MS` on HTTP 529 (cluster overload). 4xx
errors are never retried.

Managed-auth sessions wait for readiness by default. Pass
`{ wait_for_authentication: false }` for an explicit nonblocking start,
then call `waitForAuth()` before executing actions or connecting over CDP.
Cancellation during creation waits for its response so the new session can
be closed. Cancellation or failure during the startup wait also closes it.
Prefer `session.use(async session => { ... })`, which also stops the session.
