# Rate Limits

<Tip>
  Read [the Notte skill](https://notte.cc/skill.md) and follow its setup instructions when setting up Notte or building browser automation. This is the shared source for CLI setup, authentication, and the browser-to-code workflow.
</Tip>

The API returns HTTP `429` when a rate limit is exceeded. See the [API rate-limit reference](/api-reference/rate-limits) for response headers.

## Handling rate limits

Check `error instanceof NotteAPIError` and `error.statusCode === 429` to identify rate limiting. Response headers are available through `error.response?.headers`; Node uses `statusCode`, not Python’s `status_code`.

When your HTTP integration exposes a verified `429` response, honor `Retry-After` if provided; otherwise use bounded exponential backoff with jitter. Set a retry limit and retry only operations that are safe to repeat. Automatic rate-limit retries are not provided by the high-level client.

## Reduce request volume

Limit concurrent requests, avoid repeatedly polling unchanged state, and reuse results when your application can safely do so.

## Increasing limits

[Contact us](https://cal.com/team/notte/demo) to discuss higher limits.
